Jesus at the Bar
I met with a guy named “J” at a bar in Lafayette for lunch. I didn’t know him at all, but his old campus minister told him to text me and meet up. We did and the conversation started about his bible study, but it was very surface level. We moved into me talking to him about hearing God’s voice and we prayed with one another and asked God the question, “who do you say that I am?”. As we both prayed, I got the sense I should pray for him. When I asked if he heard God tell him anything, he told me not really and went on to explain what Jesus could have told him. I shared that when we prayed I saw an image of God the father holding him as an infant and that I heard the words, “I got you”. Even though this image was super generic and I felt like it could apply to anyone, I shared it. After sharing it I looked into his eyes and saw that he had started to cry. We were able to pray together and our whole conversation took a huge turn. He shared how his girlfriend was struggling with depression and he felt trapped, as well that he wasn’t yet sure if sleeping with his girlfriend was wrong. I was able to share the gospel and how I think the Holy Spirit has already convinced him of his sin. Deep down he knew. It was a beautiful encounter and we ended by thanking Jesus for meeting us for showing up, even at the bar!
